During startup, the bimetal plate lifts up the float, opening the valve and discharging air and cold condensate as it flows into the trap.
When steam and hot condensate flow into the trap after discharging the initial air and cold condensate, the bimetal plate begins to bend. As the condensate reaches approximately 90 degrees Celsius, the bimetal is flexed enough to allow normal operation of the float to begin. As condensate arrives, the float lifts up and condensate is discharged.
When condensate flow diminishes, the float lowers to close the valve seat opening. A water seal over the orifice is maintained at all times to prevent steam loss.
